Who Is MusicAl ?
MusicAl was born in Helensville just north of Auckland in 1961 and has lived most of his life in West Auckland. His real name is Russell French but picked up the nick name Al when he kept singing the Paul Simon hit " Call Me Al " all the time. When he started the school music shows people started calling him MusicAl. After experimenting at an early age with the Ukulele, Glockenspiel and some drums, he started taking proper music lessons at the age of 9 learning to play the cornet in the local brass band. After mastering the cornet he played the flugel horn, tenor horn, trombone, baritone and euphonium and was a member of 1980 / 81 National Youth Band Of New Zealand as well as the Takapuna Brass Band and the Royal New Zealand Airforce Base Auckland Brass Band. At age seventeen MusicAl went to teachers college and became a teacher, teaching in Primary Schools in Auckland. At teachers college he learned to play guitar, recorder and later on took up saxophone and clarinet. MusicAl became a part time solo entertainer at the age of 24 and is still performing music for functions throughout Auckland. In 1993 MusicAl left teaching and started performing music shows in schools to try and inspire children to become musicians. MusicAl plays many instruments including trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, panpipes, recorder and many percussion instruments. MusicAl hopes by touring schools with his instruments many children will get a hands on chance to experience musical instruments and may go on to learn an instrument. |
